I know that Akashi was made captain when he was grade 8, Nijimura was 9 as well. The question is, did they made Midorima vica-captain at that time too, or swapped Akashi and Nijimura's position, so that Nijimura was made vice-captain, considering he's still in the club?
draceempressa: I’m really sorry that I missed out on answering this ask way back when I received it! Am assuming that you have figured out an answer by now; however, the question did interest me since Fujimaki never really specifies when Midorima becomes vice-captain.
What we do know from canon:
1) Akashi and Fringe-sempai were made vice-captain during the GoM’s first year at Teikou, the same time Nijimura was made captain.
2) Nijimura resigned as captain in spring of second year. (Immediately after Kise entered the first string). At that time, there’s absolutely no indication that Fringe-sempai resigned as vice-captain as well - in fact poor Fringe-sempai seems to have been mostly forgotten……..he never gets named…..or does anything…..
One assumes that he wouldn’t get demoted simply because Nijimura had resigned. So the simplest assumption is that Midorima was appointed vice-captain at the time Nijimura and Fringe retired from the club, in 218.
3) Interestingly, Akashi changes over to Bokushi pretty soon after Nijimura and co retire, which is presumably when Midorima is vice-captain. So if Murasakibara’s statement in 175 that Akashi and Midorima used to play shougi during captain/vice meetings is true, then Midorima did in fact suffer through
losing to playing against Bokushi lots. So he didn’t just play against Oreshi in the early days, but also Bokushi in the later Teikou days.
4) There are other possibilities, e.g. that Fringe resigned when Nijimura did; that there were two vice-captains just like in Akashi’s time…etc, but the above possibility is the simplest to run with. Of course, you can do anything in fanfic/headcanon - since the manga itself doesn’t contradict those other possibilities.
